چکیده

Streptococcal adhesion, invasion, intracellular trafficking, dissemination and persistence in eukaryotic cells have a variety of implications in the infection pathogenesis. While cell adhesion establishes the initial host contact, adhering bacteria exploit the host cell for their own benefit. Internalisation into the host cell is an essential step for bacterial survival and subsequent dissemination and persistence, thus playing a key role in the course of infection. This chapter summarizes the current knowledge about the diverse mechanisms of streptococcal adhesion to and invasion into different eukaryotic cells and the impact on dissemination and persistence which is reflected by consequences for the pathogenesis of streptococcal infections.

Frequency of Adherence Genes cna, fnbA and fnbB in Staphylococcus aureus Isolates from Traditional Cheese

ABSTRACT         Background and Objectives: Several virulence factors are involved in the pathogenesis of Staphylococcus aureus. Surface proteins such as collagen binding proteins (Cna) and fibronectin-binding proteins (FnBP) are important factors in adhesion and invasion of S. aureus. The aim of this study was to evaluate the frequency of adherence genes cna...

A simple microtiter plate screening assay for bacterial invasion or adherence

Many bacteriologic studies, including cellular invasion and adherence assays, require enumeration of viable organisms or colony forming units. When attempting to screen large numbers of clinical or environmental isolates or laboratoryderived mutants for differences in invasion or adherence phenotype, standard plating methods can be

Factor H binding to PspC of Streptococcus pneumoniae increases adherence to human cell lines in vitro and enhances invasion of mouse lungs in vivo.

Pneumococcal surface protein C (PspC) binds to both human secretory immunoglobulin A (sIgA) and complement factor H (FH). FH, a regulator of the alternative pathway of complement, can also mediate adherence of different host cells. Since PspC contributes to adherence and invasion of host cells, we hypothesized that the interaction of PspC with FH may also mediate adherence of pneumococci to hum...

A role for fimbriae in Porphyromonas gingivalis invasion of oral epithelial cells.

Isogenic mutants of Porphyromonas gingivalis which differ in the expression of fimbriae were used to examine the contribution of fimbriae in invasion of a human oral epithelial cell line (KB). At a multiplicity of infection of 100, the wild-type P. gingivalis strains 33277, 381, and A7436 exhibited adherence efficiencies of 5.5, 0.11, and 5.0%, respectively, and invasion efficiencies of 0.15, 0...

An in vitro model system used to study adherence and invasion of Francisella tularensis live vaccine strain in nonphagocytic cells.

In observing Francisella tularensis interactions with nonphagocytic cell lines in vitro, we noted significant adherence, invasion, and intracellular growth of the bacteria within these cells. F. tularensis live vaccine strain invasion of nonprofessional phagocytic cells is inhibited by cytochalasin D and nocodazole, suggesting that both the actin and microtubule cytoskeletons are important for ...

The fibrinogen receptor FbsA promotes adherence of Streptococcus agalactiae to human epithelial cells.

Streptococcus agalactiae is a major cause of bacterial pneumonia, sepsis, and meningitis in human neonates. During the course of infection, S. agalactiae adheres to a variety of epithelial cells but the underlying mechanisms are only poorly understood. The present report demonstrates the importance of the fibrinogen receptor FbsA for the streptococcal adherence and invasion of epithelial cells....
